onsemi’s ambitious AI vision came to fruition with a strong focus on high-quality data inputs.

When onsemi’s CEO Hassane El-Khoury took the helm in 2020, he had an ambitious goal for the semiconductor company. He crafted a vision to transform the company from a fast follower to a leader in power and sensing technologies. To enable this transformation, CIO Neeraj Vijay recognized that isolated IT initiatives would not suffice—a comprehensive digital transformation with AI and automation at its core, was essential.
Instead of chasing AI just for the sake of it, Vijay and his team developed seven “digital threads” that span the entire organization, ranging from Idea to Market, Lead to Order, Plan to Fulfill, Source to Pay, Silica to Chip, Record to Report, and Hire to Retire.
The goal was to transform these end-to-end processes by breaking down traditional silos and improving efficiencies by leveraging AI-ready digital platforms.
“We realized that people, processes, technology, and data needed seamless integration for these digital threads to come to life,” Vijay explained. He describes AI as the brain, and automation as the hands, emphasizing that each digital thread must be able to leverage these two together.
The onsemi AI transformation journey
One of onsemi’s key AI initiatives was to create an AI-enabled technical support community and transform their technical support model. Traditionally, it would take 50+ engineers to support a global customer base across four continents.
The solution onsemi developed was elegantly simple: form an AI-first community powered by retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) technology. The system derives its knowledge from thousands of specialized engineering documents and provides immediate and accurate responses to customer queries.
However, the results were initially challenging—accuracy rates started at just 55%—but through focused data quality improvements, including humans in the loop, and enhanced search capabilities, the system now delivers 80-90% accuracy on technical responses.
Customers were “enthralled with the speed and promptness,” Vijay said, while engineers were able to spend their time addressing more complex customer problems.
Sales breakthrough: AI-powered cross-selling advisor
Unlike the relatively straightforward recommendations one might see at an ecommerce site, onsemi’s product portfolio requires deep technical knowledge to identify cross-selling opportunities across multiple products for a wide range of applications.
The AI-powered cross-selling advisor can recommend the right opportunities to the sales team for their customers. When this initiative was rolled out, it struggled to gain adoption among the sales team. The breakthrough came when onsemi integrated these AI insights into their existing Salesforce workflow. Now the company has set an ambitious year-one goal of $100 million in incremental sales pipeline, leveraging the cross-selling advisor.
onsemi built a strategic partnership with LTIMindtree
LTIMindtree, a global information technology services and consulting company, serves as a strategic partner in onsemi’s “digital thread journey,” handling the heavy lifting of data curation, data lake management, and proper data tagging, all of which provide the critical foundation of trusted, well-formed data that is a prerequisite for AI success.
Snowflake provides the unified data platform where all of onsemi’s information flows, creating the single source of truth necessary for accurate AI outputs.
The onsemi journey illustrates a crucial truth about AI transformation: success depends on data quality and organizational alignment. While 60% accuracy might enable initial progress, reaching 90% requires meticulous attention to data foundations.
The company’s focus now extends beyond specific use cases to building AI-first thinking across 5,000 knowledge workers. From research acceleration to structured data analysis, onsemi is fundamentally changing how problems get solved, proving that AI transformation succeeds when it’s woven into the fabric of business operations rather than bolted on as an afterthought.
